Less Work, More Family
It’s often overlooked, the weight of responsibility that dads hold in a family. We experience our share of sleepless nights — worrying about providing for our family, securing a stable future, and finding a balance between work and home life. It’s natural to feel the weight of these responsibilities. And in today’s unpredictable world, those concerns can seem even more daunting. But what if there was a way to take control of your financial future? To create more time for your kids? A way to build something meaningful with the convenience of working from your home office (or in my case – shed!)?
Starting an online business could be the solution you’ve been searching for. With the right guidance and a bit of determination, you can transform those fears into opportunities, creating a new path towards a future of increased freedom and security.
Modern Dads Want More Time with Family!
Modern dads are starting to speak up about their struggles, and are realising that they are not alone! Many dads are becoming more and more frustrated with the limited time they are able to spend with family, and want to discover new ways to achieve more time freedom. Dads are noticing significant increases in financial pressures, and are starting to look for creative ways to generate alternative income. There are also a bunch of dads who find themselves in mid-career, working a job they don’t love. They still struggle financially, and spend limited time with their kids. Sound familiar? If so, this article is for you.
Imagine the future, which you can create, where you get to provide for your family, and be present with your kids for the moments that matter. This guide will give you a solid roadmap for creating a future where you can have a meaningful impact both on those whom you serve in your area of interest or expertise, as well as having increased time freedom to invest in your kids when they need you the most – which is right now!
WHO AM I? THE STORY OF A MODERN DAD

“You only give your family your leftovers.” That’s what she said! My wife, that is, during a particularly challenging period when I had started to put in more and more hours and energy into work. My mental health was tanking, and my kids were getting the grumpy, stressed-out-dad version of me. For 8 years, I had juggled work and family life like a pro. Then, in late 2022, our third child arrived, and soon after my work situation turned into a circus act without a safety net (and a few too many clowns). I’m not sure if it was the extra child (any dads of 3+ kids notice the shift?!) or the combination of extra emotional energy required at home and work, but it took the wind out of me.
Here’s the kicker: my job is all about helping families stay connected. I coach parents and carers on ways to be patient, present, and supportive. Yet, there I was, turning into a dad who gets mad at his kids for interrupting him. Talk about irony!
As the stress piled up, I felt like I was losing touch with my family. It wasn’t like they were going to pack up and leave, but I was definitely becoming more of a cranky roommate than a loving dad. And hitting midlife wasn’t helping – I needed a major reset.
I didn’t hate my job, and I knew my career was in line with my values. But something had to change. I saw colleagues switch stressful jobs for other stressful jobs, like trading a tiger for a lion and expecting a kitten. Not me. I wanted my sanity back. I wanted to get back to living true to myself. No way I was going to jump from the frying pan into another frying pan.
Help From My Dad’s Dad
Without knowing the significance of what he did, my grandfather threw me a life-changing bone. He gave us some money with a catch – we had to invest it. So I started researching investment options, which led me down a rabbit hole of passive income and financial freedom. Impeccable timing! I wasn’t struggling financially, but I absolutely definitely needed the freedom. I wanted to work as much as I choose, spending more quality time with my kids – was like a dream. So how do I make it a reality?
Of course, diving into this world is like learning to speak three new languages while juggling flaming torches. I needed wise help, not a YouTube degree in investing. And no more clowns!
After a few months of dabbling and nearly falling for several get-rich-quick schemes, I found my path (insert angelic bright lights and ‘aaaaahh’ here). Yes, it started with a Facebook ad. Now usually these ads scream ‘SCAM!’ with their outrageous promises and short timeframes. But this one was different. No ‘me and my mates’ or ‘it took me a week to make 10K’ nonsense. Instead, the bloke talked about effort first, time freedom later, and thriving during recessions. As I watched the ad then researched further, it was like finding a unicorn in a herd of donkeys.
Life’s too short to waste time
So, if you’re anything like me, you don’t have time for half-cocked schemes that lead a long way to a dead end. I’ve scoped this labyrinth for you, and I can tell you there is nothing dead about where it goes. I joined the online education program and I have learnt how the modern wealthy do life and online business, passion driven and sustainable. I have learnt from months of coaching, workshops, and peer consultations with others on the same journey. And it’s all so good I just have to share it!
I am writing this for time poor dads, so one important question you might have is “When will I fit all of this in?” The beauty is that for every coaching session and workshop there is the option of attending live, or view on demand when you can. This flexibility enabled me to learn while my kids were sleeping and my wife was at the gym, in the car to and from work, and swapping out some Netflix viewing for some life changing education! I was also able to keep working and ease my way into it, so I could keep the income coming while I moved into this foreign land and learnt a new language or three.
Helping You Take Back Time
Now, I run a passion driven online business that helps dads like you and me be the best fathers we can be. I’ve figured out how to actually balance work and family life without losing my mind, which would not have been possible if I continued in the direction I was heading. In this article I have put together a summary of ideas and lessons I have learnt so far, in the hope that it will inform you and inspire you to consider what the world of online business might look like for you.
Kids only get one chance at childhood, and as dads we have a critical role to play that goes much deeper than financial provision. But often, in working hard to provide for our families, we end up giving them the exhausted, overworked version of ourselves. We tell ourselves ‘we work hard for our kids’, in the meantime we risk missing out on the moments that matter.

Understanding the basics of online business
Until recently the idea of ‘online business’ seemed kind of vague. If a mate told you he was starting an ‘online business’, you might be mildly amused, possibly a little bit curious, and maybe a whole lot sceptical. It can seem a bit airy fairy, abstract, and the kind of thing you do if you can’t get a ‘real job’! In fact when I share what I’m up to with certain people, I still get the amused half smile, like they are trying to hold back a laugh!
Come on people, get with the times! In 2024 the sky is the limit with online business opportunities, many as meaningful and impactful as any hard labour or traditional 9-5 job. There are also a bunch of perks for the committed and invested dad who craves more time with his kids. The modern dad is often looking for a way to provide for his family without spending increasing hours away from the home. Let’s take a dive into what an online business entails, how it works, and weigh the pros and cons with our families in mind.
What is an Online Business?
While there might be skeptics among us, most people benefit from the convenience of online business every day. Ever ordered anything online? Clothes, gifts, accessories, car parts, food, a taxi, accommodation? An online business involves selling products or services over the internet. It can range from eCommerce stores and digital product sales to consulting and freelancing. The main idea is leveraging the internet to reach customers and generate revenue, without the traditional overhead of a physical storefront, and the geographical limitations of time and distance. With the potential of automation and global reach, online businesses can scale and grow much faster than a brick and mortar business.
How Does an Online Business Work?

Start With The Building
Setting up an online business is like building a home online. You decide on the design, the layout, the functions, and who you will host or look after in your home. Then work out what your home has to offer – what products, services, and information you will provide to your guests. You will either have a go at being an architect, draftsman, builder, painter and interior decorator – or you will get assistance from others.
Next, invite some guests
Once your home is built and ready to go, you then need to decide who will be invited, and how you will let them know about your home and what you offer. You can use social media, email marketing and Search-Engine-Optimisation (SEO). Call this the online version of ‘word of mouth’. You can also pay to invite people through Google, Facebook and Youtube ads – the online version of a letterbox drop, radio ad or TV commercial. Once people have responded or opted in to what you are offering, you are then starting to build a guest list that you can stay in contact with via email.
Finally, Do Business
For those who want what you have to offer, you will need to work out how to make the transaction. How will you receive their payment, and how will you deliver your product or service? Often this is done within the ‘home’, and also can be done through other websites and services such as Amazon, Shopify, and WooCommerce. Growing or ‘scaling’ an online business is based on providing increasing value and meeting the needs of your customers, so asking for and acting on feedback is important, and you will need a way to do this.
Then, as with any other business, you will need processes in place to manage income, tax, ongoing expenses, and general customer service. You might choose to handle most of this yourself, or outsource, or build a team.
Benefits of Online Business
During recent world events we have learnt about the benefits of flexible working arrangements, especially the option of working from home. Many of us have upped our game when it comes to basic tech skills, out of necessity, and have found ways to save time and reduce stress. Wouldn’t it be great if that could continue?
I was very grateful for the additional hour or two each day I gained from not being stuck in traffic. Where I live, it only takes one accident or some lingering road works to really ruin your morning or evening drive to and from work. Online business means you can stay at home, or work from your favourite cafe or pub close by, or sit by the river and enjoy some fresh air.

Compared with running a business from a physical location, the only overhead costs you have is for your computer, the software required to run your business, and any marketing and initial product purchases you might need to make. No lease payments, no electricity or other building fees, no property insurance.
With the power of automation, effective marketing strategies and the right product or service, your earning capacity is not limited by your time. It’s ‘uncapped’, meaning undefined, dare I say unlimited. You will not have an hourly rate set by a standard or a policy or a clown or monkey – you can decide how much you want to earn and how. Obviously, this is conditional on how your business is set up and the type of product or service you are offering. The point is you won’t have anyone else defining your income.
With the wide range of business models and niches to choose from, the opportunity to diversify your income is at your fingertips. For example, you can get started with affiliate marketing (selling someone else’s products for a commission), use the income to create time to write a book or a short course, use the short course or book to start a coaching business, then use your coaching business to sell other products or more books! (oops, may have just shared my business plan!)
With online business, the world is literally your oyster. You will have the ability to produce pearls through a global community of people who are interested in what you are offering! The beauty of online marketing is that you can choose where and how you share your product. Pick a country (or 50 countries) and start advertising to your niche customer, and you are on your way to being a global business.
Finally, of course the magic of passive income is worth mentioning. Imagine your online empire humming along, churning out dollars while you’re off conquering the playground or dressing up like a fairy princess. Your digital cash machine never sleeps, tirelessly working for you. Get out of town, take that trip, see the world – and while you do, rest knowing your bank balance continues to grow.
Challenges of Online Business

Unlike the local corner store that is exclusive in the neighbourhood, the moment you step into online business, you are up against everyone else who had a similar idea. Depending on your product or service, you may face a crowded market and find it hard to stand out. This highlights the importance of working out who you can help, finding the best way to do it, and making sure your web presence is top-notch. With the right support and strategies, standing out is not as difficult as you might think!
Online business is highly dependent on tech skills and having the right software and programs and web platforms to ensure ongoing smooth running. For many people this is the main reason that they don’t get started in online business. The challenge is also that technology continues to change, and many of the online service providers you will rely on change their processes regularly, requiring ongoing learning and adaptation. Having good tech support is a must! Especially someone who keeps an eye on the changing tech and helps you to adapt.
Online business, particularly as a solo entrepreneur, can be a lonely worklife. Take away the social interaction that often occurs in a typical workplace, as well as the support of in-person teams and collaboration, and the feeling of isolation can kick in pretty quick. I have a feeling though that as modern dads who don’t often hang out in groups, that we might just be able to spur each other on and inspire each other in this journey, if we are willing to reach out and learn from each other.
There is also the likelihood of fluctuations in the flow of income, with seasons and shifting trends. Earnings can be unpredictable, especially in the early stages. This is not unique to online business, however it’s important to be aware that this is a reality for most online business ventures in spite of what some marketers might have you believe. Having guidance from those who have gone before us is vital, particularly around spotting trends and avoiding potholes along the way.
Customers can be very cautious when it comes to engaging in online transactions, particularly if they don’t know you well. Trust takes time to establish, particularly in the current climate of increased cyber security risks. We need to find a way to share our product or service with the people we are serving, in a way that helps them to know, like and trust us. Something led you to read this guide right?!
Finally, if we are not careful, we may fall into the trap of overworking in online business, and end up with less time with family. Without the separation of office and home, it is easy for work to creep into family life. Especially if we are not clear with boundaries and limits on the time we will invest. This can lead to pressure in relationships, and potential burnout. Just like our regular jobs, with online business we have to have clear boundaries around the time we can commit, and set realistic goals based on this. It’s helpful to be accountable to coaches or mentors, or a community of like-minded dads, so we keep on track.
What Sort of Digital Dadpreneur Could You Become?
It’s handy to have a bit of an idea what sort of online business options match your mojo. Below are four types of Digital Dadpreneurs we have identified (DISCLAIMER: This is just an idea designed to inspire, a way to get your brain juices flowing and consider your potential. With the right foundational education and support, you can do anything you set your mind to!).

Ultimate Wingman – for the Aussies and anyone who likes a bit of Aussie comedy, this is a reference from Hamish and Andy. The Ultimate Wingman is the mate you want with you if you want to look good, because he will talk you up to others. In the online business world, this relates to affiliate marketing, or selling someone else’s product or service.

Wise Helper – Someone who recognises where people are at and shares knowledge and experience to help them take a next step to where they want to be. This might be through a book, an online course, a podcast or webinars etc.

Upsale Shark – AKA the Hustler. A great hunter of bargains, finding the right products at the right price, then providing these to people who need it. For a markup!

Innovative Creator – coming up with a new idea, product, digital design or really anything that you can ship or deliver to someone. Meeting needs and solving problems by creating something new.
Of course these are not mutually exclusive. If you are creative and want to share that gift in helping others be creative, you could be both a Wise Helper and Innovative Creator. There are also types of Dadpreneurs not covered here – these are just a few starting ideas to inspire you!
NINE ONLINE BUSINESS OPTIONS FOR TIME POOR DADS
Regardless of your Dadpreneur direction, the opportunities for earning extra income online are virtually endless. Whether you want to drop a day a week in your regular job, only work school hours, save for family vacation, or completely shift your work life online, starting an online business can be a game-changer. With a bit of creativity, dedication, and strategic planning, you can turn your knowledge, skills and hobbies into profitable ventures. Here are nine online business options for 2024 that have the potential to become automated.
Online Business Option 1: Affiliate Marketing
What is Affiliate Marketing?
See ‘Ultimate Wingman’ description above. Making the other guy (or gal) look good. In other words, marketing and selling someone else’s product or service – a popular strategy in digital marketing.
What does Affiliate Marketing involve?
Partnering with other individuals or companies and promoting their products or services. You earn a commission for every sale or referral made through your unique affiliate link. You can promote products organically through your blog, social media channels, email newsletters, or YouTube videos, or through paid advertising on facebook, YouTube or Google.
Affiliate Marketing Pros
- Low Startup Costs. You don’t need to invest in product development, inventory, or shipping. Your primary costs might include a website, hosting, and marketing expenses. There is also a very low overhead compared to running a traditional business.
- Flexibility and Independence. Work from Anywhere. Affiliate marketing allows you to work remotely, giving you the freedom to choose your work environment and schedule. You can also Be Your Own Boss – you have control over the products you promote, the marketing strategies you use, and how you run your affiliate business.
- Passive Income Potential. It is literally possible to earn while you sleep, or spend time with your kids. Once your affiliate links and content are established, they can continue to generate income over time with little ongoing effort. There is also the opportunity to scale – as your audience and influence grows, so does your potential to earn more commissions.
- Diverse Revenue Streams. You can join multiple affiliate programs, diversifying your income sources and reducing dependency on a single product or company. You can also choose niches that interest you and leverage your expertise or passion to attract an audience.
- Learning and Growth Opportunities. Develop a number of new skills, as affiliate marketing involves content creation, search engine optimisation (SEO), social media marketing, and data analysis, which can be valuable in other areas of digital marketing.
- Networking. Building relationships with other marketers, influencers, and companies can open up new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
Affiliate Marketing Cons
- Income Variability. Affiliate income can be unpredictable and fluctuate based on market trends, consumer behavior, and competition. Additionally, many affiliate programs have payment cycles that can delay your earnings by weeks or months.
- High Competition. Depending on your niche (specialty/focus area), the market can be saturated. Popular niches can be highly competitive, making it challenging to stand out and attract customers. In popular niches, achieving high search engine rankings requires consistent effort and expertise.
- Dependency on External Factors. Affiliate programs can change commission rates, policies, or even terminate programs, impacting your income. You may also be affected by changes in search engine or social media algorithms, which can impact on your customer flow and earnings.
- Ethical and Legal Considerations. For example, the need for transparency. You must disclose affiliate links to comply with legal requirements and maintain trust with your customers. You also need to engage in due diligence to ensure you are not promoting low-quality or misleading products, as this can harm your reputation and customer trust.
- Time and Effort. Producing high-quality, engaging content requires significant time and effort. Staying updated with the latest marketing trends, tools, and strategies is essential for long-term success and can be time consuming.
Weighing Up Affiliate Marketing
Being an affiliate marketer offers significant advantages, such as low startup costs, flexibility, and the potential for passive income. However, it also comes with challenges, including income variability, high competition, and dependency on external factors. Success in affiliate marketing requires dedication, continuous learning, and strategic planning to navigate the complexities and maximize the benefits.
eCommerce
What is eCommerce?
For the sake of simplicity, we will focus on ecommerce as being buying and selling physical products online. We will keep digital products separate as this makes sense to us. We separate eCommerce peeps into two categories: the Inspired Creator (design and sell your own products) and the Upsale Shark (source existing products, buy cheaper and sell for more).
What does eCommerce involve?
For dads getting started in this area, the best starting point is a Business to Customer (B2C) approach. You can create an online store using platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy or Amazon. You can also sell from your own website.
What are the options for eCommerce?
When considering your approach in the ecommerce space, you need to make some decisions about profit margins, storing of stock, and use of a ‘middleman’. This will hopefully make more sense as we look at the options.
Online Business Option 2: eCommerce – Dropshipping
What is Dropshipping?
Dropshipping is a gateway for the savvy entrepreneur to sell products without holding inventory. Great option for Inspired Creators and Upsale Sharks. When a customer orders from your online store, you tip your hat to the supplier, who then ships the product directly to the customer’s doorstep. It’s like magic.
Dropshipping Pros
- Low Startup Costs. Since you don’t need to purchase inventory upfront, the initial investment is much lower compared to traditional retail. You also don’t need to worry about warehousing, packaging, or shipping logistics, which significantly reduces operational costs.
- Ease of Getting Started. Starting a dropshipping business is straightforward, with many platforms and tools available to help you set up an online store quickly. You don’t have to manage or store products, making inventory management much simpler.
- Wide Product Selection. You can offer a diverse variety of products without worrying about inventory risks. If a product doesn’t sell well, you can easily switch to other products. You can quickly adapt to market trends and customer preferences by adding new products to your store.
- Scalability. As your business grows, you can expand your product range and target markets without the constraints of physical inventory and warehousing. Your supplier handles inventory and shipping, allowing you to focus on marketing and customer service.
- Location Independence. Work from anywhere! Since you don’t need to manage physical inventory, you can run your dropshipping business from anywhere with an internet connection.
Dropshipping Cons
- Low Profit Margins. Since many dropshipping products are widely available, competition is fierce, often leading to lower profit margins. Payment processing fees, shipping costs, and platform fees can further reduce your profits.
- Inventory and Supply Chain Issues. Relying on suppliers for inventory means you may face stock shortages, leading to potential delays or cancellations. You have less control over product quality and shipping times, which can impact customer satisfaction.
- Shipping Complexities. If you work with multiple suppliers, coordinating shipping for different products in a single order can be challenging and result in higher shipping costs. Shipping times can be longer, especially if your suppliers are overseas, leading to potential customer dissatisfaction.
- Customer Service Challenges. Handling returns and refunds can be complicated, as you have to coordinate with your suppliers, who may have different policies. Any issues with product quality or shipping delays are your responsibility to resolve, which can be time-consuming and affect your business reputation.
- Dependence on Suppliers. Your business depends heavily on your suppliers’ reliability. Any issues on their end, such as inventory shortages or shipping delays, directly affect your business. You have limited control over product customization and branding, which can make it difficult to differentiate your business.
Weighing Up Dropshipping
Dropshipping is like a treasure map for entrepreneurs seeking riches in the e-commerce world. It’s a low-risk, high-reward game that lets you play to your creative strengths while wearing the dad hat (or crown). If you’re ready to set off on the online business journey, without the burden of inventory, dropshipping might just be your vessel. It’s definitely worth taking a navigator with you, especially on your first adventure – they can assist in finding the channels and avoiding the debris.
Online Business Option 3: eCommerce Print on Demand
What is Print on Demand (POD)
Are you ready to turn your dad jokes and sketches into a profitable empire without turning the garage into a warehouse? Let’s talk about Print on demand (POD) – the business model that lets you keep playing catch while your designs catch on. This is a business model where products (clothing, accessories, home decor etc) are produced only when an order is received. Great for Innovative Creators, as it will be your unique designs that win. The manufacturer then sends the product directly to your customer, and Bob’s your uncle.
Print on Demand Pros
- Low Risk. Given that products are only printed after an order is placed, there’s no need to invest in inventory upfront. You won’t have to face any issues with tripping over boxes of unsold ‘World’s Best Dad’ mugs. It also means no need for warehousing or storage, reducing overhead costs significantly.
- Ease of Getting Started. Places that print stuff (e.g., Printful, Printify, Teespring) are already connected to places where people buys stuff (e.g., Shopify, Etsy), making it easy to start a POD business. Inventory is managed by the POD provider, making it all pretty easy peasy lemon squeezy.
- Wide Product Range. You can offer a wide variety of products, from apparel to home decor to special paternity outfits, without worrying about stock. You can easily add or remove products and designs based on trends and customer demand.
- Customization and Creativity. Your designs can go from napkin doodles to someone’s new favourite t-shirt faster than a toddler’s mood swing. You have the ability to offer customized and unique designs, offering just what the people are after. You can spend your time focusing on designs, creating and marketing, and leave the heavy lifting to someone else.
- Scalability. As orders increase, the POD provider handles the printing and shipping, allowing you to scale without significant additional effort.
Print on Demand Cons
- Lower Profit Margins. You might not make a mint on each sale, but slow and steady wins the race (and pays for braces). POD products typically have higher production costs per unit compared to bulk production. To remain competitive, you might need to keep prices low, further squeezing margins. Not great for Upsale Sharks.
- Quality Control. Quality of products and prints can vary depending on the POD provider, which can affect customer satisfaction. You also have limited control over the printing process and product quality.
- Shipping and Fulfillment Challenges. Production time added to shipping can result in longer delivery times, potentially leading to customer dissatisfaction. If you work with multiple POD providers, coordinating orders and ensuring timely delivery can be challenging.
- Customer Service Challenges. Handling returns and refunds can be complicated, as you’ll need to coordinate with the POD provider’s policies. Any issues with print quality or shipping delays are your responsibility to resolve.
- Dependence on POD Providers. Your business relies heavily on the reliability and performance of the POD provider. Any issues on their end can impact your business. Customization options may be limited by the capabilities of the POD provider.
- Intellectual Property Risks. Since designs are shared with POD providers, there’s a risk of intellectual property theft or unauthorized use of your designs.
Weighing Up Print On Demand
Print on Demand is like a Swiss Army knife for the entrepreneurial dad – versatile, handy and ready for action. An attractive business model for Inspired Creators looking to start an e-commerce venture with low startup costs and minimal inventory risk. It allows for creativity and flexibility in product offerings, making it ideal for niche markets and custom designs. It also comes with challenges such as lower profit margins, quality control issues, and reliance on third-party providers. Success in POD requires careful selection of reliable providers, effective marketing, and excellent customer service to mitigate these risks and capitalize on the benefits. If you’re ready to monetise your dad brand without turning your home into a mini-mall, PoD might just be your ticket to online business success.
Digital Products and Services
What are Digital Products and Digital Services?
Digital products and services represent a broad category of online business models that involve the creation, marketing, and sale of intangible goods. A whole ocean of opportunity waiting for the eager explorer. These products and services are delivered electronically, making them highly scalable and accessible. Be inspired, Innovative Creators and Wise Helpers – this is where you shine. (Also Ultimate Wingmen can consider selling someone else’s digital product or service…)
What Does Selling Digital Products and Services Involve?
Creating products in a digital format, then offering these on your own website or using an existing platform to sell. These products can be created once, then sold repeatedly, making them attractive for time-poor dads with plenty of ideas to share with the world.
What Digital Products or Services Could I Sell?
As we dive into the digital deep, it can be a slightly overwhelming discovery of different possibilities we can offer. What we are looking for is something that draws on who we are, our experiences and background, and turns this into something that meets a need and solves a problem. We’ll look at the following in this article:
- eBooks and eJournals
- Online courses and workshops
- Stock photography and videos
- Digital art and graphics
- Coaching
- Consulting
Online Business Option 4: Info Products (eBooks and eJournals)
Make something up or share a useful truth. Turn bedtime stories into epic adventures, share your campfire yarns, or indulge us with your dad-fails. You might be surprised what comes out when you put pen to paper. Publish a book, guide, report or journal as an ebook or print on demand, using Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), or alternative formats like PDF. Amazon KDP allows you to sell your books to Amazon’s massive audience without the hassle of going through a traditional publishing company. With Amazon KDP, authors can create ebooks and paperback books, all without any upfront costs or inventory orders. The pros and cons are a little dependent on whether you use Amazon KDP or share through your own website, but here’s the gist:
eBook and eJournal Pros
- Low Overhead Costs: No need for a physical storefront or inventory. You don’t need to guard against cockroaches or mold. Your e-books and e-journals live happily in the cloud, waiting to clone themselves for your happy readers.
- Global Reach: Your words can travel faster than a caffeinated kangaroo. With the internet, you’re not just forcibly selling to your friends and your neighbor Sally; you’re reaching readers worldwide.
- Scalability: Once you’ve penned your masterpiece, it’s ready for infinite copies. No printing presses, no paper cuts—just digital magic.
- Passive Income: Set it, forget it, and watch the dollars roll in.
- Expert Status: Become the Gandalf of your niche. Share your wisdom, and soon people will be quoting you at dinner parties. “Ah, yes, as DadGuru42 once said…”
- Creative Freedom: No editors breathing down your neck. You’re the captain of this literary ship.
eBook and eJournal Cons
- High Competition: The digital sea is teeming with other fish (and some sharks). Stand out by wearing a neon hat or writing really good stuff.
- Piracy: Assuming your material is as good as you hope it is, your intellectual property needs protecting, to ensure you continue maximise the benefits from all the effort you put in.
- Trust Issues: Readers need to trust you like they trust their favorite barbecue recipe. It’s important to build relationships, not just sales.
- Tech Troubles: Formatting glitches, broken links, and mysterious gremlins. It’s like herding digital cats. But fear not, tech-savvy dads—we’ve got this!
- Marketing Mayhem: You’re not just an author; you’re a marketer, too. You’ll need to sharpen those promo skills, and shout your e-book’s name from the virtual rooftops.
- Think Castaway: Writing can be solitary. It might pay to round up a few fellow dad-authors, form a secret society and share woes, triumphs, and memes about misplaced semicolons. As much as we try, we aren’t meant to do life alone.
Weighing up eBooks and eJournals
Creating eBooks and eJournals is like building a treehouse. It takes time, effort, and a bit of creativity, but once it’s up, you’ve got a fortress of knowledge that’s all your own. With the right blend of wit and wisdom, you can turn your tales and tips into a thriving digital business. Keen? Grab your keyboard and start typing – the world needs more dad-inspired reads! Just remember to stay connected – to coaches who can guide and inspire you or other dads who are on a similar journey.
Online Business Option 5: Info Products – Courses and Workshops
Teach other dads how to build treehouses, or perform an efficient and effective nappy (diaper haha) change. Inspire us on how to whip up a meal with a baby strapped on, survive in the wild of a playgroup, or step outside the dad stuff and share the other parts of your mind and world. This is about defining what you know or have figured out, and leveraging that to help others. Getting started can feel a bit like entering a digital maze, so it’s good to have a bit of a map or blueprint.
Pros of Offering Courses and Workshops
- Wider Reach: Imagine sharing your wisdom across the vast ocean of the internet. Online courses break down geographical barriers, allowing you to reach a global audience.
- Flexibility: Create the content you have time and energy for. Start small, grow bigger. Or stay small. It’s up to you. Online courses let you dance to your own rhythm.
- Scalability: Think of scalability as your course bulking up while you sip coffee. Once created, it can serve a single student or an entire herd. No need to clone yourself—just hit “publish” and watch the magic happen.
- Expert status: If you’ve got the goods and share the goods and it helps people, you will become known for your wisdom and counsel.
- Pyjama-Friendly: No dress code here! Record videos in your superhero pyjamas or Hawaiian shirt—it’s your call. Just avoid accidentally revealing your Batman undies during a live session.
- Passive Income: Way better for you than passive smoking. Set it, forget it, and let the digital dollars flow.
Cons of Offering Online Courses and Workshops
- Tech Hurdles: Bit of a pattern going on here. Brace yourself for the occasional glitch, like riding a pixelated bronco. Fortunately we can rely on others who understand the 0s and 1s, and to be honest, with modern advances it’s pretty close to being fool proof. I hope.
- Content Overload: You might love your ideas way more than people can handle. Too much info can fry brain circuits. Keep it concise, let people eat the elephant one bite at a time.
- Marketing Mission: You’re not just a teacher; you’re a marketer, too. Somehow your eager audience needs to know about the gold nuggets you have to offer.
- Feedback Frenzy: Brace for student feedback—some insightful, some as useful as a chocolate teapot. But hey, it’s all part of the ride. Lovers, haters, and everything in between.
- Imposter Syndrome: Picture this: You’re live, teaching about time management, and you run 15 minutes late on the call. It happens. Embrace it. You’re not alone.
Weighing up Offering Online Courses and Workshops
Providing online courses and workshops is a rewarding yet challenging adventure. The flexibility and potential for passive income make it an attractive option, especially when you can share your expertise with a global audience. However, it’s not without its hurdles—creating content, tech skills, and marketing are crucial to success.
When you are ready to get started, just remember to balance it all with the grace and agility you need to navigate a living room covered in loose lego and matchbox cars. Embrace the chaos, enjoy the journey, follow a process, and your knowledge and experience can have a major life changing impact on others. It can be helpful to have some guidance along the way, especially when working out the online platforms and maximising your efficiency (and therefore profits).
Online Business Option 6: Stock Photography and Videography
If you have a passion for photography or videography, consider selling your work on platforms like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, or Getty Images. Create high-quality images and videos that cater to specific niches and trends. Perfect for the inspired creators who want to share their perspectives with the world!
Stock Photograpy and Videography Pros
- Creative Freedom: When you sell your own visuals, your content is only limited by your imagination and ability to capture it! Every family outing or playdate becomes an opportunity for capturing unique shots. Plus, you get to experiment with new techniques and gear—say hello to your inner Spielberg!
- Profit Potential: Cha-ching! Turn your photos and videos into real moolah. Whether it’s a snapshot of your dog wearing sunglasses or a slow-motion video of pancakes flipping, someone out there wants it.
- Flexible Schedule: One of the major perks of selling photos and videos online is the flexibility. You can capture moments during your daily routine. Morning walks with the stroller? Photo op. Kids playing in the yard? Video gold. You’re not tied to a desk, making this a perfect side hustle for a busy dadpreneur.
- Emotional Connection: Your visuals evoke feelings—like that time you caught your kid’s first smile on camera. Selling your own content means sharing those moments with the world. It’s like passing around a warm cookie plate of memories.
- Cons
Stock Photography and Videography Cons
- Marketing Efforts: You’ll need to promote your work to get it noticed. This means building a portfolio, engaging on social media, and maybe even starting a blog or YouTube channel. Just when you thought you’d mastered one thing, here’s another to add to your plate.
- Discoverability Dilemma: Unlike a neon sign in Times Square, your personal brand might start as a flickering firefly. It takes time to build an audience. Patience will be your lifeblood. It’s a bit like trying to be heard in a room full of toddlers—challenging, but not impossible.
- Editing Overload: Remember that pancake-flipping video? Editing can be like flipping pancakes blindfolded. Hours of tweaking, color grading, and wondering if the syrup looks too intense.
- Content Theft: There’s a risk of your work being used without permission. Watermarking and keeping track of where your content is used are necessary precautions. It’s like keeping an eye on your kids at the playground—vigilance is key.
- Storage Stampede: Your computer capacity is going to burst in to the cloud and then take over a second cloud. Gigabytes of RAW files, video clips, and outtakes—organize and cull or risk a stampede of chaos.
Weighing up Stock Photography and Videography
Selling photos and videos online is a fun and flexible way to channel your creativity while earning some extra income. The flexibility and potential for passive income make it an attractive option for busy dads. However, it comes with its own set of challenges, including time management, competition, and the need for marketing savvy.
So, should you take the plunge? Considering you are probably already doting over your kids and taking lots of pics on your weekend adventures, family holidays and fun in the backyard, why not? Embrace the adventures, capture those precious moments, and turn them into a revenue stream. Plus, you get to tell your kids that Dad’s a pro photographer and videographer, and you are making them famous! (Of course you can keep the kids, their faces etc out of the shots if you would prefer.)
Online Business Option 6: Digital Art and Graphic Design
Ready to dive into the vibrant world of digital art? Whether you’re a seasoned doodler or someone who just discovered that “undo” is the best invention since sliced bread, creating digital art can be a fantastic way to monetise your talent. Innovative Creators, step on up!
Pros of Digital Art and Graphic Design
- Flexibility: You can work anytime, anywhere. Perfect for those late-night creative bursts when the kids are finally asleep.
- Globetrotter Vibes: Imagine your art doing a world tour without leaving your cozy studio! Selling digital art lets you reach a global audience in an instant.
- Low-Key Costs: Forget about renting gallery spaces or shipping canvases across oceans. With digital art, your overhead costs are as low as a limbo stick at a snake’s birthday party.
- Format Fiesta: You’ve got options:
- Pixels: Sell downloadable art prints, colouring pages, and digital goodies!
- Merch: Slap your art on t-shirts, mugs, and phone cases. Your designs will be strutting their stuff on the catwalk of life (see above re POD).
- NFTs (non-fungible tokens): Dive into the mystical world of digital collectibles and unique tokens on blockchain platforms. First time I’ve written about this so if you figure this out, let me know how it goes.
- Side Hustles: Besides selling art, you can spin other plates:
- Art Commissions: Paint custom portraits for people who want their pet iguanas immortalized.
- Online Courses: Teach aspiring artists how to draw a pineapple riding a skateboard.
- Coaching Services: Help lost souls find their inner Picasso.
Cons of Digital Art and Graphic Design
- Learning Curve: Mastering digital tools can take time. But hey, remember when you first tried to assemble that IKEA furniture?
- Marketplace Mayhem: Picture a crowded bazaar where everyone’s shouting, “Buy my digital art!” Standing out is tougher than teaching a cat to salsa dance. But not impossible, I have seen dancing cat videos.
- Price Puzzles: Pricing digital art is like solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. Too high, and people flee; too low, and you’re practically giving it away.
- Delayed Gratification: Some platforms pay slower than a sloth on a Sunday morning. Enjoy the anticipation of the waiting game.
Weighing up Digital Art and Graphic Design
If you’re looking to blend creativity with online business, digital art is a fantastic avenue. It’s flexible, eco-friendly, and in high demand. Sure, there’s a learning curve, but with a bit of patience and a lot of coffee, you’ll be creating digital masterpieces in no time. Ready to turn your doodles into dollars? Online Business Option 7: Coaching
Ever thought about becoming an online coach? Imagine combining your dad skills with your passion for helping others. It’s like being a superhero, but instead of a cape, you have a webcam and a Wi-Fi connection. Being an online coach means you’re the go-to guru for your clients, guiding them through their personal or professional journeys. As a dad, you already have a head start. You’ve mastered the art of patience (thanks to bedtime stories and endless “why” questions), and you know how to motivate (remember potty training?). Now, let’s see how these dad skills translate into the world of online coaching. Coaches empower clients by fostering self-awareness, setting actionable goals, and developing skills and strategies to overcome obstacles.
Pros of Offering Online Coaching
- Global Dadhood: Picture this: You, in your virtual coaching lair, guiding dads from all corners of the globe… Whether it’s how to teach a kid to tame a rattlesnake, or mastering gel blaster maintenance, your wisdom knows no borders.
- Dadpreneur Vibes: As an online coach, you’re not just a dad; you’re a dadpreneur! Set your own coaching fees, like a boss. Charge in dad jokes if that’s your jam—just make sure they’re punbelievable.
- Tech Wizardry: Embrace the magic of tech spells (think Zoom, Skype, and carrier pigeons with Wi-Fi). You’ll connect with dads faster than a toddler unwrapping presents on Christmas morning.
- Flexible Schedules: Forget rigid office hours. Online coaching lets you schedule sessions around dad duties. Need to pause for a nappy (diaper haha) change or a kick of the footy? No problem!
- Dad Tribe: Imagine leading a tribe of dads—like Gandalf leading hobbits to Mordor (minus the orcs). Your coaching mojo will unite dads on a quest for epic dad skills (PS if this is seriously your jam – let me know what you’re up to cause this lights my fire too!).
Cons of Offering Online Coaching
- Time Warp: Balancing coaching, dad life, and time zones can feel like juggling flaming marshmallows. But fear not! This is where tech helps get us organised.
- Tech Hiccups: That said…sometimes, Zoom freezes. Wifi carks it. Your computer forms an opinion and that opinion is ‘not today’. It’s okay, the night is always darkest before the dawn. Troubleshoot tech glitches with a confused brain and a helpful tech whiz friend or consultant.
- Dad Guilt: When you are in your coaching calls making other people’s lives better, you might feel guilty about missing bedtime stories or forgetting soccer practice. So we have to find a balance, and remember that even Batman had Alfred to cover for him.
- Virtual High-Fives Only: No fist bumps or bear hugs here. Virtual coaching lacks the tactile dad-to-dad or person to person camaraderie. But fear not—emoji high-fives 🖐 are the new handshake! There is also the option of arranging meet ups if the geography is right. Great excuse for that overseas trip, tax breaks and all. Anyone keen for an in-person business meeting at an exotic location? 😉
- Dad Joke Overload? If you are hanging out with other dads, brace yourself for dad jokes galore. Your clients will unleash pun-derstorms, and you’ll need a dad joke umbrella.
Weighing up Offering Online Coaching
While online coaching for dads presents challenges such as time management across time zones, occasional tech disruptions, and the struggle with balancing coaching commitments with family responsibilities, there are multiple benefits
The ability to connect globally, set flexible schedules, and foster a supportive dad tribe transcends physical limitations, making online coaching a powerful platform for dads to share wisdom, camaraderie, and laughter. So, despite the absence of physical closeness, virtual coaching offers an innovative and inclusive avenue for dads worldwide to grow together and excel in their roles as both parents and entrepreneurs.
Online Business Option 9: Online Consulting
I always thought it sounded quite top shelf to be a consultant. People asking you for advice and guidance to solve a problem or help a team or organisation function better. As a dad, I now realise this is what we do at BBQs and conversations with dads who have more or less experience than we do. We consult, and we draw from the experience of other consultants.
Then we can take it up a notch, draw on either dad expertise or other passions, knowledge and skill sets we have, and help others be better. Consulting is kind of like coaching, the key difference as I see it is that coaching implies an ongoing relationship for a season (whether it’s during a 12-week course or for 12-24 months or indefinitely) while consultations can be a one off, and don’t necessarily involve ongoing follow up. Of course there are Coaching Consultants who do both.
Pros of Consulting Online
- Flexible Work Hours: As an online consultant, you can set your own schedule. Need to attend a parent-teacher meeting? No problem. You can squeeze in a client call during nap time or after the kids are asleep.
- Multitasking Mastery: Consulting online means you can juggle multiple roles simultaneously. One minute you’re crafting a business strategy, the next you’re crafting a macaroni necklace. Your multitasking skills will reach new heights—like handling a conference call while changing a nappy (haha diaper). Super Dad, reporting for duty!
- Work from Anywhere: Your office can be anywhere with Wi-Fi. The kitchen table, the playroom, or even the local park. Just imagine giving high-level advice while pushing a stroller. Your clients will never know you’re discussing marketing strategies from the sandbox.
- Dad Wisdom: Your dad skills actually come in handy. Patience, problem-solving, and the ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms are invaluable. If you can explain why the sky is blue to a curious five-year-old, you can definitely break down business analytics for a client.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Dealing with kids means thinking on your feet. Lost dummy (haha pacifier)? Improvise with a toy. Client in crisis? Improvise with innovative solutions. Your creativity as a dad translates perfectly into the consulting world, where every problem is just another puzzle to solve.
Cons of Online Consulting
- Time Management: Balancing work and family can be tricky. Scheduling client meetings around school runs and soccer practice requires some serious planning.
- Distractions Galore: Working from home means distractions are everywhere. Client calls might be interrupted by a sudden burst of giggles or a toddler demanding a snack. Just remember, mute buttons are your best friend.
- Professional Image: Maintaining a professional image while working from a home filled with kids’ artwork and toys can be challenging. Virtual backgrounds and noise-cancelling headphones become essential tools. And always have a dress shirt ready for video calls, even if you’re in pyjama pants.
- Tech Savvy: As an online consultant, you’ll need to navigate various digital tools and platforms. This includes video conferencing software, project management tools, and maybe even creating a snazzy website. Think of it as leveling up your tech skills—like moving from basic video games to the advanced stuff.
- Client Boundaries: Setting boundaries with clients is crucial. It’s important to have dedicated work hours and stick to them. You don’t want to be answering emails during family dinner or troubleshooting issues during storytime. Balance is key!
Weighing up Online Consulting
Being an online consultant as a dad is a unique and rewarding experience. The flexibility, creativity, and opportunity to blend professional life with family time make it an appealing choice. Yes, there are challenges—time management, distractions, and tech hurdles—but with your dad superpowers, you’re more than equipped to handle them.
To get the most out of this role as a dad, especially if we are heading towards more time freedom, it’s a great idea to combine direct client contact with info products, blueprints or short courses. This ensures a steady stream of income while you are climbing mountains, building sandcastles and attending ballet recitals.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GENERATING INCOME THROUGH ONLINE BUSINESS?
In summary, there are 5 key benefits to setting up an online business for income generation:
- Flexibility: Online businesses allow you to set your own hours and work from anywhere. You can attend appointments, spend time with family, and fit work around your schedule.
- More Time with Family: Running an online business from home means you can spend more time with your loved ones. You’re not tied to a traditional office, so you can be present for your family while still earning an income.
- Creative Outlet: Starting a business provides a creative outlet for your skills and interests. It’s a way to channel your passion into something productive.
- Earn Income Without Leaving Home: Online businesses eliminate the need for commuting, saving time and money. You can work from the comfort of your home.

Remember, everyone’s motivations are different, but running an online business can be rewarding and fulfilling!
HOW TO CREATE AN ONLINE BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH
- Have a clear ‘WHY?’ – what are the primary reasons you are doing this?
Is the status quo, exchanging time for money, is that for you? Do you want to shake it up, cut a new path, make more time for your family? Are you generating additional income to pay off debts, have better holidays, or upgrade your home? Your WHY matters! Without a clear reason, it will be hard to keep focused.
- Put the work in early, reap the rewards in the long term.
Most people are happy to work harder as they move through their career, and ‘better’ opportunities arise. Not you. You know that this is not living, working harder and harder as you get older is, frankly, insanity! Online business requires investment early, then if set up well, less investment as time goes on.
- Determine what population you can serve the best, then serve them in the most efficient and effective way possible.
Discovering a six or seven figure niche grows from working out who you can serve best. With the right business model, the more you help people, the greater your wealth will grow.
- Build and nurture an email list.
You might be familiar with the concept of 1000 true fans? You don’t need millions of followers, just a small group of dedicated fans who want what you have to offer and continue to find value in your product or service.
- Low ticket, mid ticket, high ticket.
If you are selling something that makes you $1 per sale, you have to sell A LOT to cover your costs. If you are selling something that makes you $10,000 per sale, you don’t need to sell as many. Some online business models only have low ticket items available. The fastest way to a reasonable income is through higher ticket items so hold this in mind as you decide on your model.
- Create multiple income streams.
In other words, don’t have all your eggs in one basket or one product or one service. Set up one at a time to help with focus, but expand as you go and diversify if possible.
- Master authority marketing.
This is a little known concept which is key to successful startups in online business. Authority marketing is a strategy that focuses on positioning yourself or your brand as an expert or authority within your industry. In this process you will seek to establish credibility, trust, and influence among your target audience. It isn’t about self-promotion; it’s about providing value and positioning yourself as a trusted resource in your field
- Automate, run on autopilot.
While you are spending time with your kids at a footy game or school event, your online business can be working across the globe and generating you income. This can be done through automated marketing, email advertising, and scheduled communication with your customer community.
RESOURCES REQUIRED TO SET UP, LAUNCH AND MAINTAIN YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS
Getting started in the world of online business can be rather daunting, especially if you haven’t done anything like this before. When I started learning about this process, I had never created a website, used automated emails, set up ad campaigns, marketed myself in any way whatsoever, recorded, edited or shared a video to promote a product or service, or written an article like this! The more I learnt, the more I realised I didn’t know.
So I decided to make things a little easier for all of those coming after me, with a bit of a summary of what you will need to get started, and I really hope it helps!
- Laptop or PC with reasonable graphics and memory.
- High speed internet connection.
- A genuine address to list for your business. This is a legal requirement for business registration in many countries, and is also a requirement for some automation processes. This can be your home address, alternatively consider a ‘mail only’ address in your neighbourhood.
- Website and Product Pages: You’ll need a platform to build your website and product pages. Consider using website builders like WordPress, Shopify, or Squarespace. These platforms offer customizable templates and e-commerce features.
- Landing Page Builder: While often part of your website, a landing page is a special gateway between your ads and marketing promotions, and your email list. It is the step someone takes often to provide you with their contact details and enables you to follow them up with your offers.
- Video Recording and Editing Tools: Video content is powerful for marketing and engagement. Invest in tools for recording and editing videos, such as Capcut, Camtasia, Adobe Premiere Pro, or even free options like OBS Studio.
- Email Service Provider (ESP) or a Client Service Manager (CSM). An ESP or a CSM enables you to manage your email marketing campaigns, build subscriber lists, and send targeted emails to your audience. It’s crucial for customer communication and retention.
- Graphic Design Tools: Create eye-catching visuals for your website, social media, and marketing materials. Tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or Figma can help you design logos, banners, and other graphics.
Remember that the specific tools you choose will depend on your business model, budget, and preferences. Start with the basics and gradually expand as your business grows.
THE FORMULA: HOW TO ENSURE YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS IS SUCCESSFUL THROUGH CONTINUOUS, HEALTHY GROWTH.
Ensuring the success of an online business involves several key factors. Let’s explore them.
- Identify Your Core Values and Mission
Clarify your purpose, values, and what you are striving to achieve. Is it to change lives, provide a unique service, offer affordable items, be environmentally friendly? Define your mission clearly.
- Understand Your Audience
Who are you here to serve? Pinpoint your target market. Understand their needs, preferences, and pain points. Tailor your offerings accordingly.
- Choose the Right Online Business Model
How will you best meet the needs of your customers? Consider selling physical products (like an e-commerce store), digital products (such as courses or ebooks), media/publisher services (ads or affiliate marketing), or other services. It may be important to offer more than one type of business.
- Build a Strong Brand
Create a memorable brand that resonates with your target audience. Consistency in branding builds trust and recognition.
- Set Goals and Stay Organized
Establish weekly goals and track your progress. Organization ensures efficient operations.
- Develop Effective Marketing Strategies
Use social media, email marketing, and other channels to promote your business. Content that speaks to your audience’s needs is crucial.
- Prioritize Customer Satisfaction
Deliver exceptional service. Happy customers lead to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth.
- Embrace Change
Adapt to market trends, technology, and customer demands. Flexibility is essential for long-term success.
- Maintain Self-Care
Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Burnout can hinder business growth.
- Engage Your Community
Give back to your community. Building goodwill fosters loyalty and positive relationships. There are multiple ways to do this, including having programs within your business that both reward customers, as well as serving the broader community.
- Utilise Support and Accountability
Starting something new can be a daunting and lonely experience. Find a community of like-minded go-getters to do this journey with. Invest in high quality coaching to support you in all of the areas that are not your strength points.
